Top 5 (series I will finish in 2023) Tuesday

Well hi! I have like… 29 series that I’m ‘reading’ and THREE MORE series that I’m about to start pretty soon. I think one or two are duologies where I just need to read one more book. But let’s see!

As ever a big BIG thank you to Meeghan @ Meeghan Reads for the Top 5 Tuesday prompts and go look here for her series that she wants to finish!

📚 🚀 📚

A Discovery of Witches - Deborah HarknessThe All Souls Trilogy by Deborah Harkness (GR/SG) –

Fall under the spell of Diana and Matthew in the stunning first volume of the No.1 internationally bestsellling ALL SOULS trilogy.

A world of witches, daemons and vampires. A manuscript which holds the secrets of their past and the key to their future. Diana and Matthew – the forbidden love at the heart of it.

When historian Diana Bishop opens an alchemical manuscript in the Bodleian Library, it’s an unwelcome intrusion of magic into her carefully ordered life. Though Diana is a witch of impeccable lineage, the violent death of her parents while she was still a child convinced her that human fear is more potent than any witchcraft. Now Diana has unwittingly exposed herself to a world she’s kept at bay for years; one of powerful witches, creative, destructive daemons and long-lived vampires. Sensing the significance of Diana’s discovery, the creatures gather in Oxford, among them the enigmatic Matthew Clairmont, a vampire genticist. Diana is inexplicably drawn to Matthew and, in a shadowy world of half-truths and old enmities, ties herself to him without fully understanding the ancient line they are crossing. As they begin to unlock the secrets of the manuscript and their feelings for each other deepen, so the fragile balance of peace unravels…

I’ve read the first two books and watched the first season – really enjoyed both of them! I loved how they adapted it to tv – love the main actors – they are the characters. I need to start the second season and then the third book this year!

The Girl From the well - Rin ChupecoThe Girl from the Well by Rin Chupeco (GR/SG) –

You may think me biased, being murdered myself. But my state of being has nothing to do with the curiosity toward my own species, if we can be called such. We do not go gentle, as your poet encourages, into that good night.

A dead girl walks the streets.

She hunts murderers. Child killers, much like the man who threw her body down a well three hundred years ago.

And when a strange boy bearing stranger tattoos moves into the neighborhood so, she discovers, does something else. And soon both will be drawn into the world of eerie doll rituals and dark Shinto exorcisms that will take them from American suburbia to the remote valleys and shrines of Aomori, Japan.

Because the boy has a terrifying secret – one that would just kill to get out.

I really enjoyed reading this last year with a book blogging server! I liked the narration and Okiku was a very interesting character. I just need to get around to finishing the series – just two more books.

The Petrified Flesh (Reckless 1) - Cornelia FunkeReckless by Cornelia Funke (GR/SG) –

Enter the magical world behind the Mirrors… the thrilling first instalment in the Reckless series by renowned, bestselling author Cornelia Funke.

Jacob has uncovered the doorway to another world, hidden behind a mirror. It is a place of dark magic and enchanted objects, scheming dwarves and fearsome ogres, fairies born from water and men born from stone.

Here, he hunts for treasure and seeks adventure in the company of Fox – a beautiful, shape-shifting girl, who guides and guards him

But now Jacob’s younger brother has followed him into the mirrored world, and all that was freedom has turned to fear. Because a deadly curse has been spoken; and Jacob must risk his life to reverse it, before his brother is turned to stone forever…

Revised and updated by Cornelia Funke, The Petrified Flesh is the first book in the thrilling Reckless series.

I’m a big big fan of the author but I’ve never read any of these books 😂 But then I read the first one last year so I want to get to the others (because they’re all arcs lol).

From Blood and Ash - Jennifer L. ArmentroutFrom Blood and Ash by Jennifer L. Amerntrout (GR/SG/My Review) –

A Maiden…

Chosen from birth to usher in a new era, Poppy’s life has never been her own. The life of the Maiden is solitary. Never to be touched. Never to be looked upon. Never to be spoken to. Never to experience pleasure. Waiting for the day of her Ascension, she would rather be with the guards, fighting back the evil that took her family, than preparing to be found worthy by the gods. But the choice has never been hers.

A Duty…

The entire kingdom’s future rests on Poppy’s shoulders, something she’s not even quite sure she wants for herself. Because a Maiden has a heart. And a soul. And longing. And when Hawke, a golden-eyed guard honor bound to ensure her Ascension, enters her life, destiny and duty become tangled with desire and need. He incites her anger, makes her question everything she believes in, and tempts her with the forbidden.

A Kingdom…

Forsaken by the gods and feared by mortals, a fallen kingdom is rising once more, determined to take back what they believe is theirs through violence and vengeance. And as the shadow of those cursed draws closer, the line between what is forbidden and what is right becomes blurred. Poppy is not only on the verge of losing her heart and being found unworthy by the gods, but also her life when every blood-soaked thread that holds her world together begins to unravel.

I know you’re thinking, but DB, didn’t you absolutely hate the first book? And yes I absolutely did, I ranted about basically every single page to my one friend BUT I also really liked ripping the book apart 😂. So I suppose I’ll read the second book, rip it apart and review it, and then just dangle a book I really want to read at the finish line as a reward for me finishing whatever the second book is? Definitely yes. Just thinking about it now I could read this and have Babel as a reward waiting for me 😂

Serpent & DoveSerpent & Dove by Shelby Mahurin (GR/SG) –

Bound as one to love, honor, or burn.

Two years ago, Louise le Blanc fled her coven and took shelter in the city of Cesarine, forsaking all magic and living off whatever she could steal. There, witches like Lou are hunted. They are feared. And they are burned.

Sworn to the Church as a Chasseur, Reid Diggory has lived his life by one principle: thou shalt not suffer a witch to live. His path was never meant to cross with Lou’s, but a wicked stunt forces them into an impossible union—holy matrimony.

The war between witches and Church is an ancient one, and Lou’s most dangerous enemies bring a fate worse than fire. Unable to ignore her growing feelings, yet powerless to change what she is, a choice must be made.

And love makes fools of us all.

While this wasn’t a super, excellent 5-star read for – I flew through it really fast (it’s like over 500 pages) so I think that counts for something and that I should carry on reading.

📚 🚀📚

All right, so, there you have it! That’s 5 series I’m really hoping to get finished this year! I’ve chosen easy ones – most of them are trilogies so it should be easy. But we all know how those shoulds go 😂

  1. I hope you have fun finishing off these series! The two of these I have read from is serpent and dove which wasn’t for me so I won’t be continuing. And reckless which I loved. I went on to read the sequel, but the third one wasn’t out at the time and now it has been years since I read them.

    1. Thanks! I read like half of Serpent and Dove #2 (actual title escapes me atm so I’ll just restart it because I have no idea where I was). Yeah apparently Reckless is a full quartet? I kept seeing the first book in my library and although Funke is one of my favourite authors I never picked it up – but of course those are the old ones.

  2. DB, don’t do it to yourself, FBAA is not worth it!! And I say that as someone who has hate read… 6? 7? books now?!! I was supposed to start A Discovery of Witches last year after I finished the TV series, but I didn’t end up buying the book. Maybe this year is the year. Hope you enjoy these when you read them!! 💕

    1. I mean I get it because fbaa was absolute torture but here’s my thinking, okay. Read a REALLY REALLY bad book… get to reread a favourite (specifically I’m thinking of Vampire Academy here)/read a book I’m thinking will be 5 stars. You see where I’m going here? 😂

A discovery of witches is a very heavy book, definitely not something you can willy-nilly pick up but the author’s done her research!

      1. FBAA does not get any better. I promise 😂

      2. I do believe that 😂 😂 Maybe I will just dnf the entire series and devote the time I could’ve been reading that to other things – like finally picking up the Tithe trilogy so I can finally get to The Cruel Prince trilogy 😂
