What I watched This Month: (End-of-Month) October

Admittedly, I watched less than usually. The culprit, as mentioned in my Wrap-Up, was Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. But hopefully I’ll get around to watching some movies and even finish one or two of the short series on my list. There’s like 3. Or 30. Whichever number.

Movies

Rewatches

  • Instant Family 5 πŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘©β€πŸ‘§β€πŸ‘¦
    • I think you should be aware of this piece of trivia “Meatball” is played by a three-year old Bernese Mountain Dog. Prior to filming, he had completed his AKC grand championship, an obedience title, several rally obedience titles, and a dock diving title. After filming completed, he added his BMDCA and Canadian draft titles and several others, becoming a Versatility Dog in both the US and Canada. Meatball is their dog.
    • I do like Rose Byrne. Loved her in Insidious. All the characters were cast well. Especially Octavia Spencer’s character, who had a nod to her role in The Help, which makes me chuckle every time. And it stars Joan Cusack, whom I love so much.
    • This is just a feel-good, cute movie I instantly clicked on when I saw it on Netflix.
  • Snow White and the Huntsman 5 πŸŒΉβš”
    • This is one of my favourite Snow White adaptations. Largely becusae Kristen Stewart does such a fantastic job at bringing Snow White to life. Other reasons include Chris Hemsworth (😍😍) and Charlize Theron (whose surname you’re probably been pronouncing wrong) as the amazingly written Evil Queen.
    • I do like – and this was in Maleficent as well (another fantastic adaptation, though this time of Sleeping Beauty) – the whole ‘sleeping princess gets woken up by True Love’s Kiss (which usually means a) they’ve known each other or like… a few days, a week, if we’re lucky and b) both parties hasn’t given consent to the kiss ❌
    • Anyway, what I love is where the princess is woken up (from a spell sleep), not by True Love’s Kiss, but by true platonic love – because platonic love and their arcs are JUST as important as romantic ones.

Must-Watches

#Alive
  • #Alive 4 🧟
    • I remember seeing this on Netflix (though very faintly) and then forgot about it until I watched it.
    • I mean, it’s zombies, so like that’s already got my interest. I also really liked the premise – isolation in a zombie apocalypse, where usually (in zombie movies) people team up or create new communities.
    • So, there’s still water and power and signal in this movie – who’s the poor chump having to keep at their job? Because I can tell you if this premise were set in South Africa, Eskom (the power company) would not do a great job…
    • I really liked the action in the movie and I’m always interested in seeing zombies being portrayed (as different movies/series usually add/take away different aspects (much like other supernatural/paranormal creatures).
    • It’s also a Korean movie! If you’re like me and love foreign movies.

The Rest

  • The Influence 4 πŸ§“πŸ»πŸ‘§πŸ»
    • Warning: The dog dies.
    • Okay, I did like this movie. But not enough to put it into the Must-Watches list? Tell me if that makes sense.
    • It was a really good horror movie, basic possession added later in – but also very confusing. I recommend it if you’re wanting a creepy foreign movie to add to your movie night.
    • The grandmother is so creepy. Everyone in here is pretty much creepy.

Series

  • Get Even 5 🏫
    • OK so like why is it that 45 min eps are long for me but like 25/30 mins are great and I can fly through them? Okay, sure, there’s the whole time difference. But don’t tell me you don’t know what I’m talking about.
    • It’s really good. Better than I thought it would be at first thought. But like don’t they speak to their parents/don’tΒ their parents speak to them about what’s going on? I did NOT expect that one kiss but I am HERE for it.
    • Aand we have bitchy and petty girls, because we can’t seem to write compelling female characters without having other female characters who are bitchy πŸ™„πŸ™ƒ
    • I know it’s a book adaptation, will there be another season?
  • The Haunting of Bly Manor 5 πŸ‘»πŸ‘
    • A few seconds after the last episode plays, my sister’s like: “Let’s start Hill House!!”
    • This show KILLED ME (in a good way). I loved every second of it. Please don’t listen to the naysayers because yes it’s not as (convetionally) scary as Hill House but it’s still scary!! It’s also a gothic romance (and I guess it wouldn’t seem conventionally scary to you if you’re not familiar with them). and it’s so PERFECTLY SPLENDID.
    • I was in awe of Hill House – I’ve watched like 3 or 4 times now, I think? And honestly, I’m always inclined to watch it again. Bly Manor was no different. I was totally engrossed in the story and my sister and I – we tried piecing together some of the stories early on with the clues that we were given (now and then right, so haha.

Yes, my watching was few this month, but at least I talk like I watched 20 titles! I was really hoping to watch a whole bunch of horror movies since it was October… but we can’t always predict what we’ll watch. Maybe, in December, I’ll watch a bunch of horrors instead of Christmas movies πŸ˜„

What about you? Did you get your spooky on last month? Any new titles you need more people to watch? Chat to me!

  1. I LOVED the ending of Bly manor, I’ve seen some shots of the couple on tumblr and omg.. it was indeedso beautiful. took me a while to understand who the teller of the story was.
I’m however more of a “paranormal horror” kind of person, so I prefered Hills house a tad bit more; but both was very confusing and hard to piece together at times. πŸ˜…

I started watching the first few eps of Hills alone, and then I brought my mom along to finish that one and watched all through Bly with her ahah — she ended up LOVING them.

I actually didn’t watched any horror movies either. I attempted on the first insidious but it was so slugging start that I was completely out-of-it.

    1. I loved how it was a romance and a ghost story in one and how the two interwined!
I need to get more pins on my board so I can just sit and scroll through them πŸ˜„
I do admit, I am also more of a typical ghost story, but the storytelling and character creation were fantastic in Bly Manor.

My mom watched some of the Bly Manor episodes and kept asking questions throughout πŸ˜„ but she’s a total scaredy-cat.

Hill House definitely has more traditional scares and ghosts, which is why I love it so much.

I love Insidious! Well, the first 2 movies, at least. The first one does have a bit of a slow start, but once you push past it, then the movie gets really good.
I love the cast so I’m a bit biased, lol.

      1. yees! that was fantastic. My mom ain’t truly a fan of horror aswell, but for some reason thoses were alright for her and not too scary; mostly confusing to figure out ahah.

yeah, slow beggining is the worst things xd I love the congurings though, and I’ve watched the last insidious for sure — idk about the others.

      2. My mom jumps at car crashes in CSI πŸ˜„ I don’t think she’s ready for my favourite horror movies. And she asks questions throughout the watching πŸ€¦πŸ»β€β™€οΈ
Insidious is definitely worth the watch!

      3. Oh no I’m all for talking through watching. I do it all the time. It’s just she asks questions even if it’s the first time we’re watching it – and I’m like… Mom, I have no idea why they did this or that πŸ˜„
